Find Out the Causes of Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is closely related to genetic factors. This test uses next-generation sequencing to analyse ASD-related genes, helping families understand possible causes and supporting early intervention, treatment planning and family planning.
ASD and the Golden 1000 Days
Worldwide, around 1 in every 100 children has autism spectrum disorder. Males are four times more likely to have ASD than females, and around 83% of ASD cases are genetically related.
Research highlights the “Golden 1000 Days” from conception to age two as a critical period for brain development, social, emotional and cognitive growth. Understanding possible causes earlier may help families arrange timely intervention.
What the Test Covers
Using next-generation sequencing (NGS), the test sequences 1,255 ASD-associated genes across the exome. This includes around 200 genes frequently associated with medical syndromes in ASD diagnosis, such as FMR1 for fragile X syndrome and MECP2 for Rett syndrome.
Results should be interpreted by medical professionals together with developmental history, clinical features and other assessments.
Who Should Consider It?
Children with a family history of ASD: if a family member has ASD, risk may be higher than in the general population. Children with developmental delays or behavioural concerns: genetic testing may help exclude or identify hereditary factors. People already diagnosed with ASD: results may help clarify which genes may contribute to symptoms.
How Results May Help
Risk assessment can support earlier intervention and preventive planning. Understanding possible causes may support personalised care planning. Results can also provide useful information for family planning and hereditary risk discussion.
Testing Accuracy
Technical information indicates 99.9% accuracy for DNA sequencing, >99% accuracy for SNP and indel variant calling, and 100% variant annotation, with external quality assurance through GenQA / UK NEQAS. Variant classification may change as medical knowledge develops, and not all variants are necessarily included in the report.
