Understand Inherited Gastric Cancer Risk Earlier
Some gastric cancers are linked to inherited genetic factors. Hereditary gastric cancer genetic testing can help identify variants associated with gastric cancer risk, allowing doctors to assess lifetime risk in the context of personal and family history and discuss suitable screening and health management.
Why It Matters
About 2-5% of gastric cancers are hereditary. Carrying a gastric cancer-related mutation may increase gastric cancer risk up to around 80%. Family history is also important; having one close relative with gastric cancer may increase risk by about three times.
The result is not a cancer diagnosis and does not mean cancer will definitely develop. Its value is to make risk assessment more focused and support earlier discussion of screening frequency and follow-up.
What the Test Covers
The test covers 31 genes associated with hereditary gastric cancer, including key genes such as CDH1, CTNNA1, BMPR1A, EPCAM, MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, PMS2, SMAD4 and STK11. Results should be interpreted by qualified medical professionals together with medical and family history.
If Risk Is Elevated
If the result suggests higher inherited risk, your doctor may discuss earlier or more frequent gastric cancer screening and symptom awareness. Clinical information also notes that early diagnosis may improve gastric cancer survival by around two times, so risk assessment helps guide monitoring.
Who May Consider It
People with a family history of gastric cancer: especially when a close relative has been affected or when several family members have related histories. People who want a clearer understanding of long-term cancer risk: to assess whether hereditary gastric cancer-related high-risk variants may be present.
Accuracy and Limitations
Technical information indicates 99.9% accuracy for DNA sequencing and >99% accuracy for SNP and indel variant calling, with external quality assurance through GenQA / UK NEQAS. Variant classification may change as medical knowledge develops, and not all variants are necessarily included in the report.
