What is an MRI Scan?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an advanced, radiation-free medical imaging technique. It utilizes a powerful magnetic field and radio frequency pulses to excite hydrogen atoms within the body’s water molecules. A sophisticated computer system then processes these signals to generate exceptionally detailed, multi-planar, and 3D images of your internal structures.
Because different tissues have varying water content, MRI is incredibly effective at distinguishing soft tissues such as the brain, spinal cord, muscles, ligaments, and internal organs.
Clinical Applications & Diagnosis:
- Brain & Spine: Detailed examination of brain tissues and spinal nerves, highly effective for evaluating strokes, brain tumors, vascular lesions, and slipped discs.
- Bones, Joints & Soft Tissues: The gold standard for diagnosing sports injuries, providing clear visibility of muscle tears, ligament damage (e.g., ACL tears), cartilage degeneration, and rotator cuff injuries.
- Abdominal & Pelvic Organs: In-depth assessment of the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, and kidneys. Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a specialized non-invasive method for detecting blockages or stones in the bile and pancreatic ducts.
- Cardiovascular System: Cardiac MRI offers dynamic imaging of heart structures, myocardial function, and blood flow, which is highly valuable in diagnosing cardiomyopathies or congenital heart diseases.
- Whole Body Screening: Whole Body MRI serves as a comprehensive risk assessment tool, aiding in the early detection of hidden malignancies or cancer metastasis.
Scan Procedure & Safety Precautions:
- During the exam, you will lie comfortably on a motorized bed that slowly glides into the cylindrical MRI scanner.
- The machine produces loud knocking or tapping noises during the scan. This is completely normal, and our staff will provide you with earplugs or headphones to minimize the noise.
- To ensure the highest image quality, you must remain perfectly still during the scan. The radiographer will communicate with you via a two-way intercom.
Important Pre-examination Notes:
- Metal Safety Restrictions: Due to the strong magnetic field, patients with pacemakers, cochlear implants, vascular stents, metal joints, or other implanted electronic devices must inform us during booking for a safety evaluation.
- Please remove all metal objects before the scan, including jewelry, watches, hairpins, hearing aids, dentures, and clothing with metal zippers or fasteners.
- If your scan requires an intravenous contrast medium, you may be instructed to fast for 4 to 6 hours prior to the procedure.
Does an MRI scan involve radiation? Is it safe?
MRI is an absolutely safe, non-invasive imaging method that is completely free of ionizing radiation (unlike X-rays or CT scans). As long as you do not have any incompatible metal implants or electronic medical devices in your body, an MRI is a highly safe and reliable diagnostic tool.
How long does the MRI procedure take?
Compared to a CT scan, an MRI requires more time to collect massive amounts of detailed data. Depending on the body part and complexity, a single-region scan typically takes between 20 to 45 minutes. If multiple areas are being scanned or if contrast dye is required, the duration will be longer.
When is an MRI contrast medium required?
MRI contrast dye (usually Gadolinium-based) is different from the dye used in CT scans and has a much lower risk of allergic reactions. It enhances image contrast, helping doctors clearly distinguish abnormal tissues, vascular issues, or tiny tumors. The need for contrast will be determined by your referring doctor or our radiologist based on your clinical symptoms.
Can I have an MRI if I am claustrophobic?
The MRI scanner is a cylindrical tube, and you will need to remain inside it for the duration of the scan. If you experience claustrophobia or anxiety in enclosed spaces, please let us know in advance. Our medical staff will communicate with you throughout the process and can provide an eye mask or arrange for a family member to accompany you (if appropriate) to create a more comfortable environment.
When can I get my medical report after the scan?
Due to the vast amount of detailed images generated by an MRI, our specialist radiologists require adequate time to conduct a meticulous analysis. Generally, the comprehensive medical report will be ready within a few working days. You may collect it in person, or we can send it directly to your referring doctor.
